Agenda: Banning of Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings
Ad Hoc Committee
Ad hoc is a Latin phrase meaning "for this". It generally signifies a solution designed for a specific problem or task, non-generalizable, and not intended to be able to be adapted to other purposes (compare a priori). Common examples are organizations, committees, and commissions created at the national or international level for a specific task.
On August 2001 France and Germany proposed that the United Nations develop an “international convention against the reproductive cloning of human beings.” The primary impetus behind the initiative was apparently a concern that those threatening to clone a human being would engage in venue shopping, looking for a nation that had not yet legally banned reproductive cloning. An international convention against such cloning, if approved by the United Nations, would announce an international moral consensus against reproductive cloning, and would ban it in nations that ratified the
convention.
As of 2013, there are several countries that are unwilling to see human cloning banned while other countries want even the possibility of human cloning eliminated. The convention which was formed about 10 years back, now requires a revision to accommodate for the potential logjam on this issue that is predicted.
