UN Women
Created in 2010, UN Member States took a historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals for gender equality and the empowerment of women with the creation of “The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women” commonly known as UN Women . It is a United Nations entity created for the protection and empowerment of women.
The creation of UN Women came about as a part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for creation of greater impact. The organization is governed by a multi-tiered intergovernmental governance structure in charge of providing normative and operational policy guidance. The General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) constitute the governance structure that sets forth the normative policy and guiding principles of the Entity.
The main functions of UN Women are to support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms, help Member States to implement these standards, stand ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it and to forge effective partnerships with civil society so as to hold the UN system accountable for its own commitments on gender equality.
